The Transportation Department is responsible for the safe passage of more than 1,000 students per day to and from the District's three comprehensive high schools and alternative education sites. We are the largest school district in Shasta County; covering almost 1,900 square miles. We also facilitate transportation needs for ROP (Regional Occupation Program), District Agriculture students and Field Trips for athletics and representational activities.

The team at Transportation is comprised of bus drivers, mechanics a secretary and a director (19 total); all dedicated to serving the students and school community. Your comments and suggestions are always welcome.

Did you know?

We house our own repair facility staffed with journeyman mechanics. In addition to maintaining our own fleet of 23 buses, we ensure that more than 55 district trucks, vans, mowers and equipment are in top-notch condition. And that's not all! We also maintain 30 school buses and other vehicles for eight other local school districts.

The last several years have afforded the District the opportunity to benefit from several CNG (compressed natural gas) buses made possible by qualifying for grant money from the California Energy Commission. The benefits are two fold: Improved air quality from reduced exhaust emissions and significant savings in school bus purchases. Over 50% of the District's bus routes are completed using buses which run on compressed natural gas.

School buses are the public icon for safety! Did you know that the school bus is more than 170 times safer than the automobile? School Buses are THE safest form of transportation in the world. This statistic can be attributed to several factors:

  • The school bus contains many safety features not found in other modes of transportation . They contain the safest passive restraint system incorporated into any vehicle in the world. This restraint system is called "compartmentalization" and is inherent in the design of all school buses manufactured after April 1, 1977.
  • Every day, before their route begins, the driver inspection their bus to ensure the safety of the passengers. In addition, mechanics perform a comprehensive inspection every 45 days or 3,000 miles. Also, California Highway Patrol inspects each bus annually.
  • The law requires school bus driver to meet stringent demands for their profession. They receive more training than any other driver--both before and after employment. Before they are allowed to transport students they must pass a criminal background check and secure a medical certificate/first aide card. They are also required to submit to a pre -employment drug/alcohol test and are randomly tested thereafter.
