     SUHSD Strategic Planning
       Outline
Jim Schwerdt, President
Current term expires 2011
Seldom does anyone have the opportunity to serve as a teacher and school board member for the school district in which they attended. I consider this an honor and a privilege. I hope my experience as a teacher will bring a fresh new perspective to a current board that has done an outstanding job. My hope is to be a positive contributor to a team that, along with administration, staff and students, has made the Shasta Union High School District a "model" district throughout the state.

My wife, Nancy, our two sons, Jason and Jimmy and I were all raised in Redding and graduated from Enterprise High School, I taught and coached at Enterprise for 35 years while Nancy worked in the office for 23 years. Jason is currently a probation officer with Shasta County and Jimmy works for a local landscaping company. Nancy and I have been enjoying (semi) retirement for the past year and a half.
Constance Pepple, President-Elect

It cannot be said often enough, that the future success of our nation depends upon how well we educate our young people today. The challenges and opportunities our students will face, after they graduate from high school, are difficult for us to foresee. It is our responsibility as parents, teachers, administrators and trustees to ensure that our students have the tools to compete and succeed in the rapidly changing economic landscape. Our students, in the Shasta Union High School District, are fortunate to have dedicated teachers, staff and administrators who truly care about students and their future success. I am grateful to have the opportunity to work together with all of these talented people, to provide our students with the best that the educational community has to offer.

Our family moved to Palo Cedro in 1996. We feel very blessed to live in an area with such magnificent natural beauty. We have three terrific kids, all attending high school at present. Therefore , my hobbies are, helping with homework, attending athletic events, volunteering at school, raising swine for 4-H and caring for two dogs, two ducks, a cat, four doves and a rabbit.
Charles Haase, Clerk

I am honored with the opportunity to serve on the Shasta Union High School District's Board of Trustees. It has often been said that our children are our future. Perhaps more important, we as parents, teachers, administrators, and a host of others hold the keys to our children’s future. What a tremendous responsibility to provide education that fills the needs of all students while keeping the cost of this education within the confines of available funding levels. I am excited about the quality of education in this district and the fact that we offer a well-rounded curriculum providing students with a variety of learning opportunities.

My family moved to Redding in 1999. Two of our children attended Shasta High School. My career field is information technology and I have worked in the banking, telecommunications, and newspaper industries as well as the government sector. I am the product of public education and have seen how valuable a solid education can be to young people as they begin their careers and progress along life's path.

The high school years are among the most important in our lives in terms of laying the groundwork for a successful, happy future. Teachers, administrators, staff and families play key roles in the positive development of our students. I believe it is the responsibility of the Board of Trustees to enhance these efforts as we all work with the students to help them set themselves up for success in life. Our district is proud to support our diverse student body in their varied paths toward life-long learning and I am honored to have the opportunity to work with the stellar team of professionals in our District's schools on behalf of our students.

Our family moved to the beautiful North State 20 years ago when my husband became a teacher and coach at Shasta College. Our two daughters graduated from high school in the District and our son attends a District high school. I've spent the past 15 years volunteering in their schools and serving on boards that supported their sports and music activities. My professional life has included eight years as a TV news reporter/anchor and ten years as a non-profit fundraising professional. I now work for a human resources management company. I am inspired every single day by the young people in our community and am tremendously proud to call Redding my home.

It is important for our high schools to work collaboratively within the community to provide our students with quality instruction and guidance. We must ensure that our students attain academic success and maintain strong connections to school and community. Continued communication and articulation between the Shasta Union High School District and our feeder elementary school districts is critical particularly in the areas of language arts, math, music, and technology. I am extremely proud to be part of the SUHSD board's efforts to work with teachers, parents, district staff and the community to develop and nurture educational programs that help our students to be successful and reach their full potential.

Born and raised in Redding, I am a graduate of Enterprise High School and CSU, Chico. I have worked as a school facility planning consultant for the past 23 years, assisting more than 300 California public school districts (including SUHSD) to prepare grant applications for State construction and modernization funding. Prior to serving on the SUHSD board, I served 8 1/2 years on the Redding School District board of trustees. My husband and I have two children, a recent graduate and a senior currently attending a District high school.
