SUHSD teachers are encouraged to talk with Marylee Boales about needs which may be appropriate to fund through grant funding.  Please see “Grants & More” in the Staff Only section of the website for more information, including currently available smaller grants suitable for teacher application.  The Grants Office is located in Room 103 at the Shasta Learning Center and is open District Office days and hours.

Federally Funded
 
ACTION – Grants to Reduce Alcohol Abuse focuses on prevention and intervention in a community-based program emphasizing youth development. Personal Growth classes now include Class Action curriculum, each school has an Action Advisory Team to plan special activities, parent classes will focus on alcohol abuse prevention, and strategies will be employed to help students stop abusing alcohol. Partners include Youth Violence Prevention Council, Love & Logic, Youth for Christ, Steps to Tomorrow, Shasta County Department of Public Health and evaluator Duerr Evaluation Resources.

School-Based Student Drug Testing is funded by the Office of Safe and Drug-Free Schools. The grant pays for enhancement of the existing drug testing program, with emphasis on the Drug Diversion, which includes evening classes and individual counseling sessions.  (Year 2 of 3)  Liz Kohn, Project Coordinator 
 
ENLACE – Foreign Language Acquisition Project – In September 2009, we started our second, three-year grant concentrating on Mandarin. The program is multi-level with high school classes and immersion content learning at RSA. RSA’s program includes K-3 and is adding one grade per year. Marylee is Program Coordinator and Manager
 
Funded by Private Foundations
 
 EE-Tech (Emerging Energy Technology) is funded by The James Irvine Foundation. This is a program to strengthen college and career pathways for students by providing them with rigorous, supportive, and career-focused dual enrollment opportunities. The District works in partnership with Shasta College, Shasta Trinity ROP, Anderson Union High School District and Redding Electric Utility. Juniors and seniors from 7 schools are currently enrolled in classes offered at Shasta College for dual credit (high school and community college). http://www.suhsd.net/index.php?m=E-Tech
Opportunity Scholarships are funded through a grant awarded to SUHSD by The College Access Foundation. Students from seven Far Northern California counties are eligible to apply for up to $10,000 per year for four years of college or university completion. The first $60,000 was awarded to eight area students over the past two school years. The District works in partnership with Shasta Regional Community Foundation. Applications available on January 2 at mycollegequest.org and www.shastarcf.org.
 
 
State Contract
Cash for College Regional Coordination  includes an 11-county region with over forty workshops during January and February to complete FAFSA and Cal Grant processes. Workshops are designed to encourage students to seek maximum financial aid for college. Funded by the California Student Aid Commission.  http://www.calgrants.org/

Let’s Talk Parenting is part of an initiative funded by First Five Commission of Shasta County. In partnership with Mercy Maternity Clinic, SUHSD will conduct four 8-week parenting class series open to the public. Cal SAFE students will learn through enhanced classes at North State Independence High School. Incentives are offered to encourage parent participation in helpful, interactive classes. Laura Hoertling, Cal SAFE/NSIHS, Lead Teacher
