The Governing Board of the Shasta Union High School District is establishing a Citizen's Bond Oversight Committee to review expenditures from construction activity associated with Measure I, which was approved by District voters on November 8, 2016.  The Committee will be responsible for ensuring that bond revenues are used only as voters intended and for informing the public of bond expenditures. The Board invites all interested community members to apply for service on the Bond Oversight Committee. Applications must be submitted by March 1, 2017. Please see the application for more information.

The recent incident at Shasta High involving a student posting a video of himself online passing out fake “deportation letters” to other students has been met with understandable outrage, both locally and nationally.  This sort of behavior is not appropriate and we have taken this issue very seriously.  We do not tolerate racially and culturally insensitive acts such as this at any of our schools. The student has been disciplined.  While we do not comment on individual student discipline, we always apply whatever consequences are available to us, including suspension and up to expulsion, to ensure the inappropriate behavior is not repeated.

 

To begin moving forward and address the larger concerns of racial tolerance and student’s social and emotional wellbeing on campus, the staff at Shasta High began working with the students the very next school day.  All staff met with students during their first period classes to discuss three focus areas: the school environment, social media and support systems for students on campus.

 

Teachers lead guided discussions about respect and tolerance in school, our community and in life. Students were encouraged to discuss examples in addition to what steps we (students, staff, and community) can take to ensure that each of us as individuals is doing our part to promote a community of respect, tolerance, and safety.

 

The power of and responsibility when using social media has been an ongoing discussion at Shasta High.  Around the campus, there are multiple “THINK” posters to remind students of things to consider before speaking/texting or using social media: is it True? Helpful? Inspiring? Necessary? Kind? If not, don’t post it.

 

Finally, the various sources of support on campus from teachers to counselors, to administration and the school resource officer were discussed – along with the various student clubs for Shasta High students – Random Acts of Kindness, Interact, Christian Club, Stand Up and Speak Out, Black Student Union, Native Wolfpack, Latinos and Amigos, and the Key Club. 

 

We will continue to work with our students moving forward on reinforcing that at all of our schools racial and cultural insensitivity like this incident is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. We also need to continually encourage students to communicate with their teachers, administrators and other staff about insensitivity, bullying, and disrespect among our students so that we can maintain our schools as safe and welcoming places for them.   We as a staff need to keep listening and responding to student concerns as they are our greatest ally in creating a safe learning environment of all students.

 

Educating teenagers to become young adults is difficult work and it isn’t always perfect.  I do know however that the staff at Shasta High, and all of our schools,  are an outstanding group of caring professionals who work hard every day to continue to make all of our campuses a positive learning environment for students.
